These New Boots is a blog about change. In this case, a change of footwear.
For the last three years, I've had one pair of boots I've worn near every day. They've been re-soled five times. They've had the leather treated and retreated, the cracks coming regardless. Those Old Boots have stamped up and down the West Coast. They've picked up salt stains in the New York City winter. They've been home to a myriad of funk coming off the sidewalks of Shanghai and the cobblestones of Mexico. Those Old Boots were ordered from my desk at the first job I felt truly committed to. They were on my feet the day I left it. Those Old Boots danced with the woman I've most loved in the world. They were with me the day she moved out. Those Old Boots collected sand as I pushed my mother in her wheelchair along the waterline. They were at the end of the hall when she took her last breaths.
Those Old Boots have miles under them. And on July 1st, 2010, Those Old Boots will be retired.
